Los Angeles, CA – The first installment of the University of MMA’s rebranded ‘Fight Night’ series was also its biggest show, presenting fifteen matches this past Sunday, March 3rd, at Club Nokia at L.A. LIVE. Among the loaded fight card were two women’s matches and the finals for the University of MMA heavyweight and light heavyweight championship tournaments.

The University of MMA Dean’s List for ‘Fight Night, March 3, 2013’ are:

Fight of the Night: TIE

Yumi Matsumoto (10th Planet Van Nuys / Defiant Muay Thai) vs. Pamela Venegas (Elite Training Center)

Juan de la Torre (10th Planet Burbank) vs. Ryan Lilley (Bas Rutten’s Elite MMA)

Knockout of the Night: Renardo Palmer (Phenom BJJ)

Submission of the Night: Tanner Chapman (IMAC)

Freshman Honors: Ozzy Diaz (NZT Pankration)

The Dean’s List is sponsored by OTM Fight Shops and WSS, which have contributed $100 gift certificates to the winners.

“This show was packed with a lot of fighters and fight teams who were making their first U of MMA appearances. They all really outdid themselves and gave us a ton of memorable matches,” said U of MMA matchmaker Jay Tan. “It’s humbling that they give us the effort that they do.”

“Just like the big shows, it’s important for fighters to get used to these types of awards and incentives.  Winning is important but winning and making a lasting impression on the audience is the name of the game.  These guys and gals had the audience ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhhing’ and wanting to see more,” added U of MMA founder / promoter Turi Altavilla.

The Dean’s List was created following the U’s ‘Champions of Tomorrow!’ event in May 2012. While three categories, Fight of the Night, Knockout of the Night, and Submission of the Night, are traditional and self-explanatory distinctions, Freshman Honors is a special category exclusive to fighters who are making their University of MMA debut (not necessarily an amateur debut). Freshman Honors is an award bestowed on the fighter with the best overall U of MMA debut that night, including fighting skills, personality, & interview skills.
